Autumn (koyo season) is one of the most magical times to visit Japan. From late September through early December, the country's mountains, temples, and parks transform into stunning displays of red, orange, and gold foliage.
When to Visit
Autumn colors move from north to south: - **Hokkaido:** Late September – Early October - **Tohoku & Nikko:** Mid-October – Early November - **Tokyo & Kanto:** Mid-November – Early December - **Kyoto & Kansai:** Mid-November – Early December - **Kyushu:** Late November – Mid-December
Kyoto in Autumn
Kyoto is the undisputed king of autumn viewing. The combination of historic temples and vibrant maple trees is unbeatable.
- **Tofuku-ji Temple:** Perhaps the most famous autumn spot in Japan, with a bridge overlooking a valley of maples
- **Eikando Temple:** Known as the "Temple of Autumn Leaves" — the evening illumination is unforgettable
- **Arashiyama:** The bamboo grove surrounded by golden and red maples
Nikko
Just a couple hours from Tokyo, Nikko's mountains and ornate shrines become draped in spectacular autumn colors. The Irohazaka Winding Road offers some of Japan's best driving scenery.
Hokkaido
Hokkaido is the first to change, with dramatic displays in Daisetsuzan National Park as early as September. The vast wilderness makes for incredible photography.
